Since I graduated from Penn State in December I have been binge watching a lot of TV shows. Spending the last seven years working full-time and attending school part-time, plus raising three kids and a husband(oh yeah and having fibromyalgia), I haven’t had a lot of time for TV. There are a handful of shows that I have kept up with but I had no idea the awesome shows that I had been missing. In a minute I will go into my top 10 binge worthy TV shows while in a fibromyalgia flare, but first let’s talk about how this started.
This kind of started for me when I got tired of re-watching Blue Bloods a million times. I love that show and it can be in the background while I’m doing something else without distracting me too much. So, it was time to branch out and find new content. Especially since I also wasn’t feeling well for months and could only go from my desk for work to my couch for a long time.
The list isn’t in any particular order. Trust me it was hard to decide which shows to include as the list could have been so much longer than this. Basically, I tried to give you a range of what I have been watching. Some of these I watch alone and some with someone special, either my husband or one or both of my sons. I won’t even mention the list I have of shows I want to watch. Fortunately, to have access to many platforms, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV+ and cable so my possibilities are endless. I do hope you are able to find these shows on the platforms available to you.
Where I can I will be using an affiliate link within the list. There is no obligation to make a purchase.
10 Binge Worthy TV Shows
- Schitts Creek – This show was unexpected. My husband found it and told me he thought I would like it. He was so correct. This is about a super rich family that suddenly finds themselves poor and homeless. Each character is eccentric and we get to see their layers revealed as the show goes along. I love the diversity found on this show and appreciated the exposure to love in all forms.
- Downton Abbey – I love British culture and so I was curious about this one. This show did not disappoint. The show takes place around World War I and that plays into the drama substantially. I feel the show is unique by showing not only the main aristocratic family but their servants as well. You will fall in love with all the characters, even the ones you don’t like so much at first.
- Lucifer – The devil himself is the star of this one. He is very open about the fact that he is the Devil but no one really takes him seriously. His powers start to go haywire though when he opens himself up to someone special. I love this show so much I have been re-watching it after going through the series once. The last season is coming up in September 2021 on Netflix!
- Madam Secretary – Tea Leoni is the absolute best! The show is about an ex CIA agent who gets tapped by her old friend (now the President of US) to become Secretary of State in his cabinet. I loved watching a woman in power and the struggles she had to face because she was a woman. This is a must watch show!!!
- Virgin River – I found this show on Netflix. I was looking for a romantic drama type of show and this one fit the bill. The show is about a nurse who recently lost her husband and was looking to relocate to a small town. We follow her arrival into the town and how she fits in or not. Of course, there is a love interest and that always draws me in.
- Sweet Magnolias – This show only has 1 season so far, so it isn’t the best option for long term binging. However, I really enjoyed the multiple relationship dramas that took place and a new season is coming soon. It is based on three women who have been best friends all their life. We get to see each of their perspectives and what they go through and of course their love interests….my favorite part lol.
- Animal Kingdom – I found this show on Amazon Prime Video. This show has great acting and an interesting story line. Basically, it depicts a matriarchal family of criminals. The mother has taught her sons how to take what they want and most of the time not get caught. She isn’t really going to win any mom of the year awards and in fact, she messes up her kids pretty good. It has very dark content and there is a lot of sex and drugs so if that isn’t your thing, this won’t be a show for you.
- Outlander – If you aren’t already watching this show, stop reading this and go start. You will thank me later. Fall in love with these characters as you watch them fall in love. The basic premise of this show is that a woman mysteriously is taken back in time where she meets a man. There is a lot of adventure while she tries to figure out how to get back to her time. I love Scotland culture, history and the accents (OMG). I don’t want to give too much away, just that you will laugh, cry and swoon. Please let me know if this becomes one of your favorites in the comments below.
- My Hero Academia – This might surprise you as it isn’t anything like any other shows on this list. The truth is that during the pandemic my two sons introduced me to anime with this show. I fell in love and have since started watching about five other anime shows. (We have anime nights at our house where we watch all the new shows for that week.) What probably draws me in the most is the Japanese culture and the “can do” attitude. The main character of this show, Deku, desperately wants to be a hero. However, he doesn’t have powers. We watch him work harder than anyone to overcome his obstacles and keep up the fight to obtain his goal, becoming the number one hero. This resonates with me since fighting fibromyalgia. I often feel like the obstacles to my goals are insurmountable and then I watch this show and I know I can push further and try harder. Keep going and Plus Ultra!
- Dexter – They are releasing a new season of Dexter after some years I believe, and so I was curious to go back and watch this from the beginning first. Since neither my husband nor I had seen it, we decided to binge this one together. It is very interesting so far, we are only in season 2. The main idea of this show is that Dexter works for the police department as a blood lab tech by day and a serial killer by night. I am loving the show and the special time with my hubby.

Fibromyalgia and binge watching TV
When you have fibromyalgia there is a lot of pushing yourself past your limits and then resting. Often, watching something whether it be a show or movie is about all you can do. You might be too tired to do anything physical or even read a book, but not tired enough to sleep. This is where occupying your mind with a show that takes you out of your own reality is so helpful. Let’s face it, sometimes living in someone else’s shoes is way more preferable than your own. I would love to hear your comments about what you are watching, what you think I should watch and what you think about the shows I have listed. Gentle hugs warriors!
